Ilona Schneider

Christl, 2025 8×10 sliver gelatin contact print.

Christl is a photographic artist in Hobart, and a close friend. We often come together in my studio (TopSpace Studio) to talk about Life, Art and Photography. Like most photographers, she doesn’t like to be photographed, and I knew that. I surprised her when casually set up the large 8 x 10 Century Studio Camera and asked her to sit in front of it. She did, but in the moment of exposure, decided to turn away. The exposure time was two seconds. I realised in the moment of exposure that she had turned away. It was her choice. She is 81 and the body speaks its own language. Website.

LIQUID INTO LIGHT
25 x 20 cm print from 4 x 5 negative
I spent some time touring the coastal areas of Tasmania with a view camera earlier this year, and found many subjects of interest, often in areas away from the busier hotspots. This particular setting was photographed near our camp before dawn (my favourite time of the day for land or seascapes), and from memory required an exposure time of about two minutes. Website.

Mat Hughes

Marjal de los Borrones, Gandia. Spain. 21 x 26 cm Van Dyke Brown.
This image was made from an initial 4×5 camera exposure. While this print was made with the Van
Dyke Brown printing process, it’s actually an unfinished piece and will soon be on its way to becoming
a gum bichromate (over Van Dyke Brown).
One mistake brushing gum over this print and it will be consigned to the bin along with many others.
With the global price of silver nitrate going through the roof, it seemed proper to show this print in all
its muted tonal glory before I get the brush out and while I can still afford the chemistry.
In case you were wondering, the black dots in the trees are Great Cormorants. The fishermen here
don’t like them. They fish better. Website. Instagram.

Peter de Graaff

Unrelated Objects.
A continuation of the images for the un-related objects series. Shot on old 50 ISO Ektachrome that has been kept in the freezer at -10C. Then lit in the studio to retain shadow detail when push processed 2 stops. Slow films when pushed produce more grain than faster films. Scanned from the film. It will become a dye transfer print shortly. A thankyou to Gary Chapman who supplied me with the old mincer and to Corine Mason who made the silk flowers.

Bianca Conwell
