Fuijifilm discontinues Fujichrome Velvia 50 sheet film.
In a blow for large format photographers Fuji has announced that it is discontinuing manufacture of the iconic Velvia 50 in sheet film sizes.
‘FUJIFILM Imaging Systems Co., Ltd. (President: Koji Matsumoto) has been working hard to absorb costs such as improving production efficiency and reducing costs for the 160NS 120 size colour negative film for photography and the Velvia 50 sheet film size reversal film that have been used for many years. However, because it became difficult to procure some of the raw materials used for production, we have no choice but to discontinue production and sales.‘ Media release 15 October 2021.
Final dates for shipping orders: Velvia 50 4×5 March 2023, Velvia 50 8×10 December 2021.
This leaves only two large format transparency films left: Kodak Ektachrome 100F & Fuji Provia 100.
Melbourne based large format landscape & wilderness photographer Mark Darragh’s photographs shown here give an insight to what a great film Velvia 50 was.

Mark Darragh, thank you for providing your photographs for this article. Velvia 50 in sheet film certainly was an iconic film and will be missed.
However expected this may be, it’s still a sad day for large format photography!
